Wood Wick vs Cotton Wick Candles: Which to Choose

Posted by Little Bull Falls Soap Works on

Walk down the candle aisle — or scroll your favorite candle shop — and you'll face a choice: wood wick or cotton wick? They look similar sitting in their jars, but once you light them, they're two very different experiences.

As candle makers who pour every candle by hand, we get this question all the time. So let's break it down honestly: the crackle, the burn time, the soot, the maintenance, and the ambiance. By the end, you'll know exactly which wick fits your vibe.

The Sound: Crackle vs. Quiet

This is the big one, and it's where wood wicks really shine. Wood wicks produce a soft, soothing crackle as they burn — think of a tiny fireplace on your coffee table. It's subtle, not loud, and many people find it deeply relaxing. If you're the type who puts on a "crackling fireplace" video in the background, a wood wick candle is made for you.

Cotton wicks, on the other hand, burn silently. If you light candles at the dinner table or during a workday and don't want any background noise, cotton is your friend. Neither is better — it just comes down to whether you want ambiance you can hear.

Burn Time and Flame

Wood wicks tend to burn a bit slower and cooler, which can stretch your candle's burn time. They also produce a wider, flatter flame that spreads heat evenly across the wax. That wide flame melts a full pool of wax faster, which means better scent throw — the fragrance reaches the whole room, not just the area around the candle.

Cotton wicks produce a taller, narrower flame. They can burn slightly faster, but they're consistent and predictable. In a smaller room, a cotton wick candle can fill the space with fragrance beautifully.

Soot and Cleanliness

Here's a myth worth busting: it's not really the wick material that determines soot — it's the quality of the wax and how you burn the candle. A well-made candle in either style shouldn't smoke much.

That said, wood wicks can produce a bit more soot if they're not trimmed properly, since they're thicker. The fix is easy: always trim a wood wick to about 1/8 inch before lighting (yes, shorter than cotton wicks). A quick pinch off of the charred wood top keeps the flame clean and the crackle crisp. Cotton wicks should be trimmed to about 1/4 inch for the same reason.

All of our candles are poured with 100% soy wax, which burns cleaner than paraffin regardless of wick type — less soot on your walls and jars either way.

Maintenance: Which Is Easier?

Let's be real: cotton wicks are the low-maintenance option. Trim to a quarter inch, light, done. If the wick mushrooms a little, pinch it off and move on.

Wood wicks need slightly more attention. They need that shorter trim (about 1/8 inch), and on first light they can take a few extra seconds to catch — tilt the candle slightly and let the flame touch the wick until it takes hold. If your wood wick won't stay lit, the most common culprit is a wick trimmed too long or a wax pool that's drowned it. A quick fix and a relight usually does the trick.

Is it fussy? Not really. Once you've lit a wood wick candle twice, it's second nature.

The Ambiance Factor

This is where it gets personal. Wood wick candles bring a rustic, cabin-in-the-Northwoods feeling — the crackle, the wide golden flame, the way the light dances. They're made for cozy evenings, reading nooks, and long Wisconsin winters. Our Caribbean Teak Wood Wick Candle pairs that fireplace crackle with warm, masculine teakwood notes, and the Nag Champa Wood Wick Candle brings an earthy, incense-like calm to any room.

Cotton wick candles feel a little more classic and versatile. They're perfect for entertaining, gifting, or anyone who just wants a clean, simple burn. If you love fresh, bright scents, try our Coconut & Chamomile Wood Wick Candle — okay, that one's a wood wick too, but its light coconut-and-chamomile fragrance shows how a great scent works in either style.

So… Which Should You Choose?

Here's our honest cheat sheet:

  • Choose a wood wick if you love the crackling fireplace sound, want stronger scent throw, and enjoy a cozier, more rustic vibe. You're okay with a few extra seconds of wick care.
  • Choose a cotton wick if you want silent burning, the simplest possible maintenance, and a classic look — great for gifts and dinner tables.

Still can't decide? Get one of each. We won't judge — most of our customers end up with favorites in both camps.
